One of the most undeniable proofs that the Bible is the inspired word of God is the sheer magnitude of prophecies within its pages that have already been fulfilled.  Not only does the Bible have predictions of things that have yet to happen, but it also has predicted things in the past that did happen.  Nearly 2,000 prophecies to be exact. Prophecy is simply history that is pre-written.

Christmas is the time of year when we celebrate the incarnation.  I hope that we never get over the wonder of what it really means to celebrate Immanuel which literally means "God with us." But what makes Christmas even more of a miracle is when you see all of the Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament that Jesus fulfilled in the New Testament.

Here's my favorite "Top 10 List" of Messianic prophecies...

10. BIRTHPLACE - In approximately 700 BC, the prophet Micah named the tiny village of Bethlehem as the birthplace of Israel's coming Messiah (See Micah 5:2). The fulfillment of this prophecy is one of the most widely known and celebrated facts in all of human history. Some skeptics have suggested that Jesus just "arranged" his life around to fulfill certain prophecies. I was born in Knoxville, Tennessee.  I don't know about you, but my parents didn't ask my opinion as to where I was going to be born. It just sort of happened that way.  The birthplace of Jesus was not incidental, it was divinely providential.

9. VIRGIN BIRTH - Isaiah 7:14 says, "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel."  This was fulfilled in Matthew 1:22-23 and Luke 1:31-35.

8. ANCESTRY - The Jewish people were perhaps the best in the world at maintaining their ancestry / genealogical records. These records of every Jewish family dating back to the very beginning were preserved in Jerusalem until the Romans destroyed the city in 70 A.D.  Scriptures stated that the Messiah was to be a descendant from the lines of Shem (Genesis 9-10), Abraham (Genesis 22:17-18), Isaac (Genesis 26:4-5), Jacob (Genesis 28:14), Judah (Genesis 49:10), Jesse (Isaiah 11:1-5), and David (2 Samuel 7:8-16). The gospels provide Jesus' genealogy proving that He fulfills this prediction of the Messiah (see Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-28). This was open for public record. If there had been any contention regarding the ancestral lines of Jesus, the people of that time would have been quick to point out those discrepancies and bury the case for Jesus' messianic claim.

7. MIRACLES - Scripture stated that the Messiah would have the power to calm to sea (Psalm 107:29) and perform many special miracles (Isaiah 35:4-6). How did Jesus fulfill these prophecies? He calmed the sea (Matthew 8:23-27) and he performed a ton of miracles! (Matthew 15:29-30). Hundreds of folks in the 1st century were witnesses of these miracles and the works of Jesus were even noted by secular historians like Josephus.

6. FORERUNNER - Prophecy stated that the Messiah would be preceded by a forerunner. Isaiah 40:3-5 and Malachi 3:1-3 both refer to the one who would cry out in the wilderness, "prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God." Who was this fulfilled by? None other than John the Baptist.

5. PALM SUNDAY - The Messiah would present himself by riding on a donkey. We see this in Zechariah 9:9 and fulfilled in Mark 11:1-10 as Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey to shouts of "Hosanna" as the people were heralding the arrival of their King.

4. BETRAYAL - In the fifth century B.C., a prophet named Zechariah declared that the Messiah would be betrayed for the price of a slave - 30 pieces of silver - and also that this money would be used to buy a burial ground for Jerusalem's poor foreigners (Zechariah 11:12-13). Both Bible writers and secular historians record that 30 pieces of silver was the sum paid to Judas Iscariot for betraying Jesus, and that the money went to purchase a "potter's field" - just as predicted (Matthew 27:3-10).

3. CRUCIFIXION - Some 400 years before crucifixion was invented, both Israel's King David and Zechariah described the Messiah's death in words that perfectly depict this type of execution. They also said that no bones would be broken (Psalm 22; 34:20; Zechariah 12;10) contrary to the customary procedure for crucifixion. Again, historians and New Testament writers confirm this fulfillment.  Jesus was being executed on the cross, and because he died after only 6 hours, there was no need to break his legs - accelerating the death process. The Roman soldiers found Jesus already dead but thrust a spear into his side just to make sure.

2. THE SUFFERING SERVANT - Isaiah 53 is one of the most amazing Messianic prophecies.  When you read through this passage, it's almost as if you are reading a description of Jesus out of the gospels. Isaiah chapters 52 and 53 are literally the gospel of Jesus in the Old Testament.  Seriously... you should stop what you're doing and go read it!  There are 48 Scripture passages in the New Testament that confirm each and every one of these specific details about the life, betrayal, arrest, trial, and crucifixion of Jesus.

1. THE EXACT TIMETABLE - This one is my absolute favorite Messianic prophecy because it predicts down to the very date the coming of the Messiah!  Absolutely blows my mind!  Sir Isaac Newton said that we can stake the entire truth of Christianity on this one prophecy alone.  Want to know what it is?  Stay tuned and I'll walk you through the details of it on my blog later this weekend!

HERE'S THE BOTTOM LINE: There are over 300 prophecies about Jesus in the Old Testament fulfilled in the New (see a complete list below). According to one mathematician, the chances of Jesus fulfilling just eight of those 300 prophecies is 1 in 10 to the 17th power! Let me illustrate how huge that number is. Imagine taking, 100,000,000,000,000,000 silver dollars and laying them across the whole state of Texas.  They would cover the entire state 2 feet deep! Then take one of those coins, mark it with a black "X", and mix it all up in the pile. Then blindfold a man and tell him that he can walk as far as he wants to all over the state but he can only pick up just one of those silver dollars. What are the chances that he would select the one marked with the black "X"? The same odds that Jesus would have had in fulfilling just 8 of the hundreds of prophecies about His life!  That, my friends, is what I'd call a "Christmas miracle!"
